A fatal crash between a taxi and a Toyota Avanza in the early hours of this morning claimed the lives of twelve people on the Golden Highway near Eldorado Park, right next to the cemetery.

Senior Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson said the accident took place at about 4.50am.
“A taxi transporting passengers collided head-on with a Toyota Avanza on the Golden Highway, between Concorde Road and Stockwell Avenue. The Toyota Avanza driver and three children below the age of 10, who were in the Avanza, died on the scene.

“Six of the taxi passengers were also killed,” Minnaar said.

This is not the first time that a fatal accident has happened on this stretch of the R553 between Lenasia and Eldorado Park.

Three of the deceased were identified as school children (Grade 1, Grade 5 and Grade 6) that attend Robertsham Primary School.
Spokesperson for the Gauteng Education Department Steve Mabona said Mabona said acting education MEC Jacob Mamabolo will be visiting the school and families on Wednesday.
