In this series Skid Marks looks at spinners who influenced spinning in different parts of South Africa.

We start the series in the Western Cape, the southernmost region of the African continent.

Edward Campher

Edward Campher – more commonly known as Eddie Rasta is from Connought Est, Elsies River in Cape Town.

Eddie started spinning at the Pavilion and on the streets in the late 80’s.

He started spinning a Mk2 Ford Cortina with a Ford V6 engine.

Nowadays you will see Eddie Rasta perform stunts in a Mk3 Ford Cortina.

Eddie Rasta has recently upgraded his engine to a newer Nissan VQ35 engine.

He lived in Johannesburg for several years and one of his best memories would be travelling to Joburg on the train.

“It was a great accomplishment to travel on the train, with my car to spin at an event.”

Kaylin Oliphant, a female spinner from Kimberley is currently his favourite spinner.

If there was one person he could share a pitch with, Eddie dreams big and would burn rubber with Vin Diesel.

Lionel Jordaan

Lionel – affectionately know as Oom Loeks has been spinning since 1982.

He comes from Northpine, Kraaifontein in Cape Town, and when Oom Loeks started spinning in the streets he used a Ford Escort.

Because he needed more power he switched to a BMW E30 with 2.9 engine.

Many of you may remember Oom Loeks from the TV series, So You Think You Can Spin.

“My best memory in spinning was when I won a Trophy in Pietermaritzburg for spinning,” said Jordaan.

Currently Oom Loeks says his favourite spinner is Katra Mokgoshi from Polokwane.

He would love to share the Pitch with Katra one day.

Jeffrey Flandorp

In addition we have Jeff who was also a contestant on So You Think You Can Spin known as Fear Factor.

Before So You Think You Can Spin, Jeff started spinning in the early 80’s.

He comes from Bishop Lavis, Cape Town.

Those days he spun in a parking area infront of Indiana restaurant in Gatesville.

“I started spinning with a Ford XR6 and up until today using the Ford XLE.”

The first time we saw Jeff spinning was at Vaal spinfest 2015.

His car had two steering wheels so he could spin from either side of the car.

Jeff said “I have no favourite Spinner….those I had huge respect for has already passed on.”

“If I had to mention one, it would be ‘Moetjie’, a pioneer in spinning in South Africa as we know it.”

Jeff is a passionate guy who loves sharing the pitch with all spinners.

His favourite event would have to be one of the early events at Monstermob where he won a trophy.

Sean February

He hails from Mitchell’s Plain and his name is Sean February.

February’s first time spinning was in Colorado on the field in 2003 using a Toyota Hilux 2.8 diesel.

Sean currently drives a BMW E30 powered by a 2JZ engine.

In recent years Sean has shifted his focus more towards drifting and loves sharing the pitch with Shane Green.

Samkeliso “Sam Sam” Thubane is one of Sean’s favourite spinners in South Africa.

One of his most unforgetable moments is taking part in the Redbull Shay i’Moto spinning competition.

Shane Green

He is from Atlantis on the West Coast and he started spinning in 2005.

He started spinning in his hometown at the pitch in Atlantis, and his first spin car was a BMW and he still uses BMW till this day.

“I’m currently using a BMW with a M20 325i engine” said Shane.

Shane is part of the GHC Racing team.

My favourite spinner is Shaye Green #GODSPLAN.

And Shane said “He gives me goosebumps when I see him spin taking into account how old he is.”

“I love sharing the pitch with Sean February and Eddie Rasta,” who are also on the list.
